South El Monte
EI Monte, incorporated in 1912, is a city in the San Gabriel Valley. region in Los Angeles County located approximately 13 miles northeast of Downtown Los Angeles and 12 miles southeast of Pasadena. Irwindale and Arcadia are to the north, Baldwin Park and the City of Industry are to the east, South EI Monte is to the south, and Rosemead and Temple City are to the west. The City of EI Monte should not be confused with South EI Monte, which is a smaller, separate city.
San Gabriel River
The 60.6 mile long San Gabriel River which flows from the San Gabriel Mountains, within the Angeles National Forest, south to Alamitos Bay in Long Beach, is the eastern boundary of EI Monte.
Whittier Narrows Recreation Area
The Whittier Narrows Recreation Area, headquartered in EI Monte, is a 1,400-acre regional park located in the San Gabriel Valley. South EI Monte is to the north, the San Gabriel River and Pico Rivera are to the east, Whittier is to the south and Montebello, the Rio Hondo, and Whittier Narrows Golf Course are to the west. The Whittier Narrows Recreation Area contains North Lake, Center Lake, Legg Lake, several softball and soccer fields, numerous picnic areas, and the Whittier Narrows Nature Center which offers both exhibits and educational programs.
EI Monte - South EI Monte
Chamber of Commerce
The EI Monte - South EI Monte Chamber of Commerce supports local businesses by providing networking and advertising opportunities, referrals, a business directory, educational programs, and representation with local government. Members of the Chamber are from EI Monte, South EI Monte, Baldwin Park, Rosemead, Temple City, and the surrounding areas.
Rio Hondo College
Rio Hondo College is a two-year public community college founded in Whittier in 1963. The college primarily serves Whittier, Pico Rivera, Santa Fe Springs, EI Monte, and South EI Monte. Rio Hondo College offers 30 associate degrees and 127 professional certificates. Most earned units are transferable to the California State Universities. The college also offers a Pathway to Law School program. The annual enrollment averages more than 4,900 full-time students and over 16,000 part-time students.
North EI Monte
North EI Monte is an unincorporated census-designated place in the San Gabriel Valley and eastern Los Angeles County. The population is nearly 4,000. Arcadia is to the north, EI Monte is to the east and south, the Rio Hondo Golf Course and the Arcadia Golf Course are to the east, and Temple City is to the west.
South EI Monte
South EI Monte is a small, incorporated city in the San Gabriel Valley and eastern Los Angeles County. The much larger city of EI Monte is adjacent and to the north. South EI Monte is mostly residential.
EI Monte Museum
The EI Monte Museum is located on Tyler Avenue next to EI Monte High School and is open to the public. It is one of the most unique museums in the San Gabriel Valley having an incredible collection of photos taken of EI Monte and the San Gabriel Valley over many years. The museum also has an excellent collection of historical newspapers, as well as a vintage World War II Rolls Royce used by Sir Winston Churchill.
AHMC Healthcare
AHMC Healthcare, established in 2004, is a privately owned, for-profit hospital corporation based in the San Gabriel Valley Region of Los Angeles County. AHMC owns and operates Alhambra Hospital Medical Center, Garfield Medical Center in Monterey Park, the Greater EI Monte Community Hospital, Monterey Park Hospital, Whittier Hospital Medical Center, San Gabriel Valley Medical Center in San Gabriel, and several others located outside of the San Gabriel Valley. AHMC operates more than 2,000 beds and employs over 10,000 caregivers.
Rio Hondo
The Rio Hondo, a 16.4 mile major tributary of the Los Angeles River flows through the western and southern part of EI Monte.
Rancho La Puente
Rancho La Puente was a 49,000-acre Mexican land grant made in 1771. The grant included areas within present day Los Angeles County and present-day Orange County. Present day communities that were part of the grant include Avocado Heights, Bassett, Baldwin Park, San Dimas, Rowland Heights, Hacienda Heights, City of Industry, La Puente, Walnut, Covina, West Covina and small areas of South EI Monte and Irwindale.
Rancho San Francisquito (Dalton)
Rancho San Francisquito was an 8,894-acre Mexican Land Grant located in the San Gabriel Valley region of Los Angeles County given in 1845 by Governor Pio Pico to Henry Dalton. The land included the present-day cities of EI Monte, Irwindale, and Temple City. Dalton's holdings also included Rancho Azusa de Dalton acquired in 1844 and Rancho Santa Anita acquired in 1847. At one time Dalton owned most of the land spanning from present day Pasadena to present day San Dimas.
Rancho Potrero de Felipe Lugo
Rancho Potrero de Felipe Lugo was a 2,042-acre Mexican land grant located in present day South EI Monte which is in the San Gabriel Valley of Los Angeles County. The grant was made by Governor Pio Pico in 1845 and was located along the San Gabriel River.
