Montebello, California
Montebello, founded in 1899 and incorporated in 1920, is a city in Los Angeles County located in the southeastern section of the San Gabriel Valley. It is one of the, Gateway Cities and is a member of the Gateway Cities Council of Governments and the San Gabriel Valley Council of Governments. Monterey Park is to the north, East Los Angeles is to the east, Pico Rivera is to the south, and Whittier is to the east. Downtown Los Angeles is located about eight miles to the west. The largest employer in the city is Kaiser Permanente which employs over 4,700 employees.
Community Parks
Community parks include Grant Rea Park which features a small zoo, pony rides, train rides and a small water park; Reggie Rodriguez Park which is an 11 acre park named after a Vietnam War hero, and Bicknell Park which features the Montebello Genocide Memorial.
Montebello Genocide Memorial
The Armenian Genocide Martyr,s Memorial, commonly known as the Montebello Genocide Memorial, is dedicated to the victims of the 1915 Armenian genocide perpetrated by the Turkish government in which the Turks murdered more than 1,500,000 Armenians. The memorial is located in Bicknell Park and is owned and maintained by the City of Montebello.
Montebello Bella Verde Golf Course
The Montebello Municipal Course, also known as the Montebello Bella Verde Golf Course, a 120 acre, 9-hole golf course developed in 1928 as a private club" was purchased by the city in 1941 becoming a municipal course. It offers a large conference center and several hotels. Golf lessons are available.
Montebello Chamber of Commerce
The Montebello Chamber of Commerce established and incorporated in 1912, supports the success of businesses in Monteb!lllo and the surrounding communities including Monterey Park, East Los Angeles, Pico Rivera, and Whittier. The chamber provides mixers, networking, breakfasts, grand opening events, referrals, advertising opportunities, educational opportunities, and a valuable member directory. Memberships are welcome and available.
Montebello Historical Society
The Montebello Historical Society is a non-profit membership organization that is committed to the preservation of local history. The organization is supported by donations, memberships, and volunteers. The Juan Matias Sanchez Adobe, located in Montebello, is home to the organization. The adobe/museum is open on Saturdays from noon to 3:00 pm. There is no admission fee.
